X-ray is a quick imaging test that uses a small amount of ionising radiation to produce images of bones, joints, the chest and selected other body areas.

Before you book
• You will usually need a referral or clinical request explaining why the X-ray is needed.
• Provide previous imaging or relevant clinical information where available.
• Our in-house GP may provide a referral where clinically justified.
How to prepare
• Wear clothing without metal around the area where possible.
• You may need to remove jewellery, belts, zips or other items.
• Tell us if you are pregnant, may be pregnant or have had recent imaging for the same problem.
• Tell us if mobility affects standing, lying down or holding a position.
At your appointment
We confirm three identifiers, the requested examination, body part and side before positioning. The exposure is quick; positioning and safety checks take longer.

Most appointments take around 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the body part and number of views.
Results and next steps
A Consultant Radiologist report is returned through the agreed secure results pathway. Urgent findings follow the appropriate escalation process.
